Definition of real estate attorney

real estate attorney
1. An attorney or lawyer who specializes in real estate transactions. This includes dealing with property tax issues and the transfer of land and buildings.

  • agreement of sale (AOS)   A document in which a property's buyer and seller approve the price and other terms of the transfer of title.
  • building and loan association   A financial institution designed to help members finance real-estate transactions.
  • conveyance tax   A tax on the transfer of real property.
  • insurance attorney   An attorney who works with insurance law.
  • land transfer tax (LTT)   A provincial tax payable on any property that changes hands. First time buyers may be eligible for a rebate.
  • legal fees and disbursements   Charges paid on your behalf by a solicitor that are in addition to professional costs.
  • real estate (RE)   A section of land including all the natural resources (above and below the surface) and any permanent buildings or structures located on it. Also known as "realty."
  • realtor   A real estate broker or an associate holding active membership in a real estate board.
  • solicitor information   When you apply for a mortgage you will need a law firm with a lawyer's name and their contact information which would typically include the office location, phone number, fax number and e-mail address.
  • transfer of title (TOT)   A document signed by the seller and purchaser transferring ownership, at which time the document is registered against the property.
